Quality Jeep Cherokee Models in Cleveland, TN

Since 1975, the Jeep Cherokee has exemplified versatility in motion. Originally released as a sportier, younger alternative to the family-friendly Wagoneer, the Cherokee has changed names and sizes since it was originally designed, but has also remained an undeniably practical performance-based vehicle throughout the entirety of its existence.

Brief History of the Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee has been helping Jeep push the boundaries since its inception. Remaining true to its sporty roots, the Cherokee has remained a favorite vehicle for outdoor enthusiasts since it first hit the lots.

Originally sold as an SUV, then a compact SUV and currently a Crossover SUV, the current Cherokee is a clear reflection of the engineering evolution that has taken place at Jeep over the past 40 plus years.

The Jeep Cherokee is currently offered in four different trim options, Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk®, the latter of which is the trim specifically designed to maximize off-road capabilities. While the first-generation Cherokee was all about fun, it has evolved to become a more efficient and technology-driven vehicle, while still maintaining its original purpose of helping young drivers enjoy their time on the road more.

1975

The first-generation Jeep Cherokee was released in 1975 as the sportier two-door alternative to the ultra-popular Wagoneer. The Cherokee was designed to appeal to a younger audience with front bucket seats, a sport steering wheel and enhanced detailing. Four trim levels were offered for the first-generation Cherokee, which included S, Chief, Laredo and Golden Eagle.

1984

In 1984, market research told the higher-ups at Jeep that giving the Cherokee a more compact body would help boost sales. They did just that by shortening the vehicle by 21 inches and making it six inches narrower, as a result, they saw an increase in Cherokee sales.

The second-generation Cherokee was as popular with critics as it was everyday drivers, that being the case, this Cherokee also swept the “4X4 of the Year” awards by three primary off-road magazines, an unprecedented achievement for the time. Until 1988, the Cherokee was the only compact SUV on the market that offered buyers two-door and four-door options.

2001

2001 brought on some big changes for the Jeep Cherokee. The most noticeable of which being that Jeep changed the name of the vehicle from Cherokee to Liberty. The Jeep Liberty was designed to exemplify all of the most defining features of the Jeep brand, the seven slot grille and round headlamps being among the most recognizable of these features.

The Liberty received a number of performance upgrades, like an independent front suspension and a new 3.7-liter V6 to replace the old 4.0-liter I-6 engine.

2014

Jeep reintroduced the Cherokee name back into the lineup in 2014 as a replacement for the Liberty. Jeep’s goal for this Cherokee was to redefine the midsize segment. With this iteration, Jeep replaced the classic circular headlights with sleek slit-style lights. This new design also champions efficiency by offering a more aerodynamic body and efficient engine options.

Along with being the first midsize SUV to offer a standard nine-speed automatic transmission on all trims, the forward thinking 2014 Cherokee came in four trim options: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk®.

What’s New For 2020?

The Jeep Cherokee has not received any major upgrades for 2020. That being said, there are a few new features to be found in the model. The most notable upgrades that 2020 Cherokee drivers will experience are expanded driver safety aids, more robust Amazon Alexa capabilities and two new color options - Sangria and Spitfire Orange.
