Quality Toyota 4Runner Models in Cleveland, TN

Since the mid-eighties, the Toyota 4Runner has provided off-road enthusiasts with the perfect car for outdoor adventures and morning commutes alike. Originally based on the Hilux truck, the 4Runner has developed into one of Toyota’s top-selling models of all time. This is largely due to its real-life performance capabilities that have, over time, proven their appeal to soccer moms and off-road warriors equally.

Brief History of the Toyota 4Runner

Few vehicles exemplify versatility in motion as perfectly as the 4Runner. Since its inception in 1984, the 4Runner has been the go-to choice for drivers who expect unrelenting performance from their vehicle.

Originally an off-road modification to the Hilux truck, the 4Runner has grown completely independent from its Hilux roots and is currently one of the most popular vehicles on the road.

The Toyota 4Runner is currently offered in seven different trim options: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited and Nightshade. The TRD trims are more geared toward off-road performance, while the other trims focus more on adding the little luxuries modern drivers have come to expect, even in performance vehicles.

1984

The first-generation Toyota 4Runner rolled onto lots in 1984. The original 4Runner was developed as an off-roading modification of the Hilux truck. This model featured a fiberglass shell over the rear seats and the 4Runner’s signature retractable rear windshield.

Still sought after by dedicated off-road enthusiasts, the first-generation 4Runner was powered by a 2.4-liter 22RE I-4 engine with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 also available.

1990

The second-generation 4Runner was still based on the Hilux frame, however, this generation added two rear doors to allow more convenient entry into the backseat. The 1990-1995 4Runner still featured a front independent suspension but replaced the rear leaf springs with coils.

The engine options offered were the same as in the first generation, with the turbocharged V6 receiving a chain-driven transfer case to reduce overall engine noise.

1996

The third-generation 4Runner is the first 4Runner generation not to find its roots in the Hilux. This 4Runner received an all-new body sitting on a chassis designed specifically for it. Engine options improved for this generation to a 2.7-liter I-4 base and 3.4-liter V6 upgrade, and these options offered drivers the increased performance they craved while also being a viable daily driver.

Additional improvements included major interior upgrades in materials and ergonomics, a smoother exterior body and a lengthened wheelbase.

2003

The fourth-generation 4Runner started moving in a slightly different direction, focusing more on roadway functionality than off-road performance. While still one of the most capable off-roading vehicles on the road, Toyota set out to make the 4Runner a more viable option for daily driving as well.

The exterior developed a more rounded-off look, the interior became more spacious and better appointed, and the engine options improved once again to a standard 4.0-liter V6 and a 4.7-liter V8 option.

2009

The fifth-generation 4Runner is far and away the most luxurious 4Runner ever created. Powered exclusively by a 270-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine, the current 4Runner is capable of overcoming any off-road obstacles that get in its way. The fifth generation also marks the introduction of the TRD Trim. This trim introduces increased off-roading capabilities through upgraded shocks, springs, tires and skid plates.

Seamlessly combining off-road endurance with real world performance, the fifth-generation 4Runner has been a top-selling model year after year for Toyota.

What’s New For 2020?

The Toyota 4Runner received a few upgrades for 2020. The most notable upgrades that 2020 4Runner drivers will notice are standard Toyota Safety Sense™ technology, an eight-inch touchscreen, two rear USB ports, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integrations.
